LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN

Fidelio

Text by Joseph Sonnleithner e Georg Friedrich Treitschke

Fidelio is the only opera composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. As often happened with his works, composing the opera was not simple. In fact, Beethoven produced three different versions. Today, the first version in three acts Leonore – and the third – in two acts, are usually preferred. The opera was performed for the first time in Vienna in 1805, without much acclaim from the public and Beethoven was forced to withdraw it. This was due not so much to the undisputed quality of Fidelio, a work that the composer was very fond of, but the tension in Vienna at the time, with Napoleon’s troops that had occupied the city and the audience mainly being made up of French soldiers.

The story takes place in Seville, where Leonora disguised as Fidelio, tries to release her husband Florestan, captured and made prisoner by his enemy Don Pizarro. With the help of the prison guard Rocco, and his daughter Marcellina, Leonora manages this arduous task.
