It is at the Théâtre des Arts in Rouen that Madame Bovary attends a performance of Donizetti’s opera. An episode that becomes a summary of the entire existence of Emma, Flaubert’s heroine. From this opening, a psychoanalyst and an art historian narrate an opera that still surprises for its ability to weave all the notes of the Gothic tale – family vendettas, denied love, forced marriage, murder, madness – paving the way for an analysis that, devoid of its romantic atmospheres, succeeds like few others in investigating the passions, digging into the souls of the protagonists to reveal what lies beneath the social structures and psychological pressures that will suffocate Lucia di Lammermoor without remedy.
