First performance
Under the Jaguar Sun is the title of a collection of “sensory” short stories written by Italo Calvino around the themes of smell, taste and hearing. In fact, the writer’s initial plan was to complete five short stories about the five senses, in a sort of cognitive investigation of the outside world through each of them. With this title will be heard in Bologna the new work by Pasquale Corrado (1979), the Concerto for oboe and orchestra born from the commission of the Teatro Comunale, for which in 2019 the composer from Lucania had presented – again as a premiere – the chamber opera Macbeth Alone.
Paul Hindemith
Most noble vision
Visiting the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence in 1937, Paul Hindemith was thunderstruck by Giotto’s frescoes of episodes from the life of St. Francis. The inspiration resulted in a ballet — later called a choreographic drama or danced legend — entitled “Saint Francis” and as such was presented on July 21, 1938 in London with the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo and choreography by Léonide Massine. “Nobilissima visione” was the title chosen when the score was published and since then it has been linked mainly to the Concert Suite which, as in the ballet, ends with an impressive Passacaglia celebrating the apotheosis of the Saint and his admirable “Canticle of the Creatures.”
