Gioachino Rossini
Il Barbiere di Siviglia
Text by: Cesare Sterbini
Composed in less than two months, The Barber of Seville is considered Gioachino Rossini’s masterpiece. The opera was first performed in Rome in February 1816 and it was probably because of the little time available that the well-known work by Beaumarchais was chosen, which in those years had already been set to music six times. In this opera, Rossini often includes music already used in other works, for example his famous symphony was first written for L’Aureliano in Palmira and was then used in Elisabetta, regina d’Inghilterra. The Barber of Seville did not impress the public straightaway, but in a short time it became a symbol of opera buffa (comic opera) and Rossini’s style.
The story narrates the comical ideas of Figaro, the barber and factotum of the town, to enable Rosina and Count Almaviva to marry, despite this going against the wishes of Don Bartolo, Rosina’s guardian.
