Il Trovatore

Giuseppe Verdi’s opera in four parts, with libretto by Salvatore Cammarano, is part of Italy’s most popular trio of operas (along with Rigoletto and La traviata). The opera has a complex story, with dramatic contrasts typical of Verdi’s works dating from the mid-nineteenth century. The first performance of opera, in Rome in 1853, was hailed as a great success.

The plot is set in Spain at the turn of the 15th century. At the beginning, the story tells of the younger son of the old Count di Luna being kidnapped by a gypsy (Azucena) to avenge her mother’s death, condemned because she had cast an evil spell. The plot then tells of the love story between Leonora, a young noble lady with whom the young Count di Luna is enamoured, and the troubadour Manrico. A tale of jealousy, fires, duels and lies, only to discover the true identity of the Troubadour – the kidnapped son of the Count – too late to avoid the tragic end.
