Opera in four pictures by G. Giacosa and L. Illica
“The mistake of a moment,” “Bohème opera missed will not make rounds”: one can also reflect on the critical cantonments of the debut (1896). Bohème went around and around a lot, but it is also true that it is not an opera like any other and, looking beyond affectionate habit, it can continue to amaze. Based on a novel by Henri Murger (1851), Puccini pours into it his firsthand experience as a student and young artist and it is the opera in which we can all mirror ourselves. Four boys share an apartment, toils and wiles to make ends meet, dreams, pranks and ambitions. Two of them have romances, but one of the girls dies. One might say “that’s all,” except that this “all” is the experience each of us has as we live and mature: Mimì’s death has nothing heroic about it; it is, simply and painfully, part of life. Puccini’s notes, Illica’s and Giacosa’s verses tell this story with the sensitivity of a thousand details woven into the voices, gestures, and orchestra.

LUCI
Giuseppe Di Iorio
Author
(1858-1924) Regarded as the last exponent of the great Italian operatic tradition; he imposed himself on the public at large thanks to the intuition of publisher Giulio Ricordi, who saw in the composer from Lucca the genius in whom to invest and with whom he teamed up with librettists Giuseppe Giacosa (1847-1906) and Luigi Illica (1857-1919). From this “dream team” came operas such as La bohème, Tosca and Madama Butterfly, works that consecrated Puccini as Verdi’s only heir and that still make millions flock to theaters around the world.
Librettists
(1847-1906) Italian playwright, poet and librettist with a poetic and refined style, capable of combining sentiment and delicacy with a strong dramatic sense. He is best known for his collaboration with Luigi Illica in writing the librettos for some of Giacomo Puccini’s most famous operas: La Bohème, Tosca and Madama Butterfly. In addition to his work with Puccini, Giacosa wrote numerous plays. His ability to create emotionally intense texts made him one of the most important Italian librettists of his time.
(1857-1919) Italian playwright and librettist with a direct and realistic style, best known for his collaboration with Giuseppe Giacosa in writing the librettos for some of Giacomo Puccini’s most famous operas, including La Bohème, Tosca and Madama Butterfly. He also wrote librettos for other composers, such as Umberto Giordano(Andrea Chénier) and Alfredo Catalani(La Wally).
