Salome

Based on Oscar Wilde’s eponymous work, Richard Strauss’s Salome was first staged in 1905 in Dresden. Strauss was renowned for his symphonic poems such as Till Eulenspiegel and Also sprach Zarathustra, however Salome also made him a celebrated composer of the opera, which was followed by more well-known works such as Elektra, Der Rosenkavalier and Die Frau ohne Schatten.

The first performance of Salome was not well received, scandalising and irritating the public because of the sadistic, violent nature of the plot and strong eroticism of the music. In fact, Strauss emphasizes the instrumental plot to the point that the orchestra is considered the true protagonist of the work, and in fact the opera is considered by some as a dramatized symphonic poem. The story tells of Salome, daughter of Herodias, who is said to be in love with Jochanaan (John the Baptist), who does not feel the same way and rejects her. Suffering from this refusal, Salome will dance for the tyrant Herod, who is enchanted with her, in order to have Jochanaan’s head cut off.

AUTORE

Richard Strauss

Richard Georg Strauss (1864 – 1949) was a German composer and orchestra conductor of the late romantic age.

Known above all for his symphonic poems and operas, Richard Strauss is not to be confused with the Strauss family of Vienna, famous composers of dance music, who were not relatives.
