“The mistake of a moment,” “Boh\u00e8me opera missed will not make rounds”: one can also reflect on the critical cantonments of the debut (1896). Boh\u00e8me<\/i> went around and around a lot, but it is also true that it is not an opera like any other and, looking beyond affectionate habit, it can continue to amaze. Based on a novel by Henri Murger (1851), Puccini pours into it his firsthand experience as a student and young artist and it is the opera in which we can all mirror ourselves. Four boys share an apartment, toils and wiles to make ends meet, dreams, pranks and ambitions. Two of them have romances, but one of the girls dies. One might say “that’s all,” except that this “all” is the experience each of us has as we live and mature: Mim\u00ec’s death has nothing heroic about it; it is, simply and painfully, part of life. Puccini’s notes, Illica’s and Giacosa’s verses tell this story with the sensitivity of a thousand details woven into the voices, gestures, and orchestra. <\/span><\/p>\n
