UMBERTO GIORDANO

Andrea Chénier

Andrea Chénier, historical drama in four paintings set at the time of the French Revolution, is the most famous opera by Umberto Giordano.

Inspired by the life of the revolutionary poet André Chénier, the opera with a libretto by Luigi Illica faithfully and in detail recounts the historical picture of the protagonist, his love for Maddalena di Coigny and his arrest.

COMPOSER

Umbero Giordano

achieved his first success with the verist work Mala Vita (later reworked with the title Il voto), performed in Rome in 1892. After Regina Diaz composed his most popular work, Andrea Chénier (1896), followed by Fedora (1898) and Il re (1929). Giordano’s exuberant and sanguine temperament, freely expressed in his early works and significantly in Andrea Chénier and Fedora, gives itself to the emphasis and melodic unfolding, with results not lacking in spontaneous eloquence, suggestive and effective immediacy.
