Shiyeon Sung

The South Korean conductor, Shiyeon Sung, born in 1975, was the first woman to win the prestigious Georg Solti International Conductors Competition in 2006. From 2007 to 2010 she was assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She has directed some of the most important international orchestras, including the L. A. Philharmonic, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and the US National Symphony Orchestra. She studied with Rolf Reuter and Hanns Eisler in Berlin, where she completed her conducting studies in 2006. Her brilliant career as a conductor was anticipated by her piano studies, which she began at the very early age of four.

Born in 1965, Andrea Luchesini came to international attention when he won first price in 1983 in the Dino Ciani competition of La Scala, Milan, paving the way for partnerships with important orchestras and conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Semyon Bychkov, Roberto Abbado, Riccardo Chailly and others. His career as a concert performer has also been recognised, with the Accademia Chigiana award in 1994 and the “F. Abbiati” Critics’ award in 1995.
His recordings of works by the composer Luciano Berio are superb, with an album released on the Avie Records label in 2007, followed the by concert “Echoing curves” by the same composer recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra for the BMG label, and the collaboration with the cello player Mario Brunello.
For the Stradivarius label, he has published an entire collection of Beethoven sonatas.

BÉLA  BARTÓK

The Miraculous Mandarin, Suite

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN

Concerto for pianoforte and orchestra n. 1 op. 15 in C major

ANTONÍN  DVOŘÁK

Symphony n. 8 op. 88 in C Major

COMPOSER

The Miraculous Mandarin Suite (duration 20 minutes)

Date composed: 1927
First performed: Budapest, 15 October 1928
Movements:
1. Allegro
2. Maestoso
3. Tempo di valse

Conceived as a ballet-pantomine in one act, the work was opposed because of its supposedly daring plot: the story of a young prostitute hired to lure and rob passers-by, one of whom, the third, is the miraculous and mysterious Mandarin, who symbolises the dual theme of love and death. The concert Suite embodies salient moments and the music is a vehicle for the opera and a way of getting round censorship; the orchestration is based on solid formal structures that bring together different episodes. The dance of the Mandarin with the prostitute is considered the best orchestral part of the work.

Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra n. 1 op 15 in do maggiore (durata 36’)

Data composizione: 1795
Prima esecuzione: Vienna, Großer Redoutensaal del Burgtheater, 18 Dicembre 1795 (data presumibile)
Movimenti:
1. Allegro con brio
2. Largo
3. Rondò. Allegro scherzando

With the intention of becoming Mozart’s direct heir in Vienna, Beethoven composed this concerto in 1795 (and completed it in 1798), often performing it on the only tour in his life which took place between 1796 and 1798. The concerto was published in 1801 and was dedicated to Princess Barbara Keglevich Odescalchi, Beethoven’s young pupil. For this reason, the concerto has an eighteenth-century air of music for Viennese tastes, in the same style as Mozart’s works. A certain creative generosity in the composition is not lacking however, culminating in the final inventive and dynamic Rondò, starting from the theme of the refrain.

Symphony n. 8 Op. 88 in C Major (duration 35 minutes)

Date composed: 1889
First performed: Prague, Národní Divadlo (National Theatre), 2 February 1890
Movements:
1. Allegro con brio
2. Adagio
3. Allegretto grazioso
4. Allegro, ma non troppo

Dvořàk composed nine Symphonies between 1865 and 1893. The eighth is one of his most well-known works and is dedicated to the Bohemian Academy of Science, Art and Literature of the Emperor Francis Joseph. With its serene atmosphere, the symphony has a pastoral theme much loved by the composer, although in the unusual key of C major rather than F major. The influence of popular music recalling the composer’s Slavic origins, is also evident. The work is an example of a “poetic symphony”, with a sentiment that is so great as to alter classical forms in favour of freer structures, supporting the symphonic poem (a word termed by Liszt) and symphonic rhapsody.
