GIOACHINO ROSSINI

L'italiana in Algeri - Opera Next

This light-hearted opera takes in place in two acts, set to a libretto by Angelo Anelli. The first performance was held in Venice in 1813 and it is said the Gioachino Rossini composed the music in just twenty-seven days. The great composer succeeded in breathing in new life into farce and opera buffa, renewing stereotypes, which for all too long had been a part of Italian comic opera, and reworking them with an enthralling virtuosity and comic realism.

The story takes place at the court of Mustafà, Bey of Algiers, who, tired of his wife (Elvira), and the slaves of his harem, decides to find an Italian lover. After their ship which had set sail from Italy is shipwrecked, Isabella, and her servant Taddeo, heading to Algiers to find Lindoro, Isabella’s love and now the Bey’s slave, are captured by pirates. When Isabella is taken to court, the trouble begins for Mustafà, who ends up made a fool of Isabella’s games, who manages to find Lindoro and take him back to Italy.
